Visiting Kaieteur Falls, Guyana: What to Expect, What to Bring and When to Go

October 30, 2026 · Guyana Tours

Aerial view of Kaieteur Falls and the Potaro River gorge in Guyana's rainforest, seen from a small plane

Coming home to Guyana for Christmas, or visiting for the first time? A Kaieteur Falls tour from Georgetown is the one trip people talk about long after they fly back out. In a single morning you leave the city, cross an unbroken carpet of rainforest by light aircraft and stand at the edge of a gorge watching the Potaro River drop 741 feet in one clean fall.

This guide covers how a day at Kaieteur Falls in Guyana runs, what you’ll see beyond the waterfall, what to wear and bring, and when to plan your visit.

Getting to Kaieteur Falls from Georgetown

Kaieteur sits deep in the rainforest of Kaieteur National Park, and most visitors reach it by light aircraft from Georgetown. The full price, inclusions and departure days for our trip are on the Kaieteur Falls Day Tour from Georgetown page. In short, it’s GYD 80,000 (about US0) per person with the flight, park fee and guide included.

Small planes have strict load limits, so passengers are weighed. Children aged 3 and under can travel free if they are small enough to sit on a lap, and our team checks the weight of any 3-year-old before confirming.

How a Kaieteur day tour runs

This is a half-day trip. The flight takes about an hour each way, and you get up to two hours on the ground at Kaieteur. That is enough to walk the trails with your guide and see the falls from several different lookout points, each with its own angle on the drop and the gorge below.

What you can see besides the waterfall

Kaieteur National Park was created in 1929 and is home to wildlife you won’t easily find elsewhere. Guides regularly point out:

  • The tiny golden frog
  • Giant tank bromeliads along the trails
  • The bright orange Guianan cock-of-the-rock
  • The Kaieteur swifts that nest behind the curtain of water

Birders should read our guide to birdwatching at Kaieteur Falls before they go.

Practical tips for your Kaieteur trip

  • Wear proper shoes. The trails are rocky and can be wet. Leave the slippers at home.
  • Pack light. A small bag with water, a rain jacket and sun protection is plenty.
  • Charge everything. Bring a charged phone or camera and spare memory. You will take more photos than you expect.
  • Respect the edge. Stay with your guide and keep back from the cliff at the lookouts.
  • Plan for the weather. Small aircraft fly only when it is safe, so keep a backup date in mind when you book. If the weather affects your flight, our team will contact you about the next step.

Kaieteur in December: book early

Our Kaieteur tour runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. December is when many Guyanese come home, and holiday dates fill first, so it pays to plan ahead.

Here is how booking works:

  1. Message us on WhatsApp with your preferred date, the full names of everyone in your group and a valid email.
  2. Pay a 50% deposit, or the full amount, within 48 hours of your reservation being set up. Unpaid reservations are released after 48 hours so the seats can go to other guests.
  3. Pay the balance at least 4 weeks before your tour date. For a trip in the last week of December, that means paying in full by the end of November.

You can pay by MMG, cash at our office or local bank transfer. Our team sends you a confirmation email once the booking is set up.

Kaieteur Falls tour FAQ

Is Kaieteur Falls worth visiting?

Yes. The Potaro River drops 741 feet (226 metres) in one clean fall, and few people see it, so you often have the lookouts nearly to yourself. The flight over unbroken rainforest is part of the experience.

How do you get to Kaieteur Falls?

Most visitors fly from Georgetown by light aircraft, about an hour each way. See our Kaieteur Falls day tour for the price and departure days.

How long do you spend at Kaieteur Falls?

Up to two hours on the ground. The whole trip takes half a day.

Can children come on the Kaieteur tour?

Yes. Kids pay the adult price. Children aged 3 and under are free if they are small-sized; we check the weight of any 3-year-old because of aircraft load limits.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety comes first: small planes only fly in safe conditions. That is why we ask for a backup date when you book, and our team contacts you directly if the weather affects your flight.

Can I swim at Kaieteur Falls?

No, swimming isn’t possible at Kaieteur. If a swim matters to you, the Kaieteur and Orinduik Double Waterfalls Tour adds a stop at Orinduik Falls, where you can swim.
