Every Easter, the dusty town of Lethem on Guyana’s border with Brazil turns into cowboy country. The Rupununi Rodeo brings vaqueros (the savannah’s ranch horsemen) into the arena, and crowds travel from across Guyana and abroad to watch. If Rupununi Rodeo 2027 is on your list, here is what to expect and how to get there with us.
What is the Rupununi Rodeo?
The rodeo grew out of the contests ranch hands held during the yearly cattle round-ups in the 1950s and 1960s. By the 1980s it had become an annual Easter event at the Triple R Rodeo Grounds at Tabatinga, Lethem. Today it is organised by the Rupununi Livestock Producers Association, with support from the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and the Guyana Tourism Authority.
Expect bareback bronc riding, calf roping and wild cow milking, plus horse racing, music, food stalls and craft markets around the grounds. It is a real celebration of Rupununi ranching life, with a strong Brazilian flavour from just across the river.

Quick tips for rodeo weekend
- Bring your passport. You stay in Brazil, so you will be stamped out of Guyana and into Brazil.
- Change some money to Brazilian reais in Lethem for snacks and shopping.
- Dress for sun and dust. A hat, sunscreen, water and closed shoes make rodeo afternoons far more comfortable.
- Check entry rules early. Border requirements can change, so confirm the latest with the Brazilian consulate. Our guide to crossing the border at Lethem explains how the crossing works.
